Departing Ngorongoro Crater was hard as we know it's getting closer to the end of our safari and that makes us sad. Hassan our guide has us up early again as have a big drive heading south east past Lake Manyara, through the highlands and the Karatu district towards the Tarangire National Park where we will have our last game drive. As with all the parks we have entered , registration at the main gates is a must and strict rules about staying on the designated "roads".

Red dirt termite hills

The Tarangarie Park is stinking hot and the dirt roads are a redder, deeper colour similar to soil from Broome, WA. The animals have a similar tinge of red over their bodies as they roll, spray and lie in the dirt. The concentration of elephants in this park in high. They roam in massive herds which allows us to get up close and personal. The female elephants are quick to protect their young when the vehicle passes by and in one case was set to challenge us when we stopped for a closer look. Trumpeting and commencing a charge, she was not happy for us to stop. Okay, no worries, we get the message, cool your jets!

The approach
So this 4wd caper is really starting to get Andrew interested in the prospect of a 4wd for home! We cross one river , fast following too and he wants a 4WD. How does that happen ?? Personally, I was worried if we would make let alone thinking it was fun. Give me AC and comfort any day.

We enjoy a game drive en-route to our next amazing accommodation, Tarangire Sopa Lodge just in time for a hot lunch. Full on BBQ by the pool and the opportunity for a swim to cool our jets. Its bizarre we can be in the middle of a National Park with the possibility of any animal wondering into the lodge area. They provide you security to your door at night for the fear we could encounter an animal. Elephants have been known to just wander into the area at night!

These Rock Hyaxs were everywhere around the lodge. We were told they have the structure of and elephant. Really , no way ? Regardless , an interesting little rodent rat looking beast.

All this in the middle of nature!
We set off for our twilight drive and meet our friends again in the park. Elephants, zebras , giraffes and all the menagerie we have come to enjoy and love watching.
